Chapter 16: Health promotion and older people

Mrs Pathos is 78 years old. She moved from Cyprus to England 40 years ago and lives in a terraced house in London. Her husband passed away two years ago and her son died a year ago. Her daughter Maria works full time and visits at weekends.

Mrs Pathos has osteoarthritis (OA) affecting both her hip joints, and type 2 diabetes. Over the last five years she has experienced increased pain, stiffness and reduced range of movement. She recently fell, when hanging out her washing. She experiences pain when climbing the stairs to reach the toilet and as a result she has reduced her fluid intake. She had a urinary tract infection and her diabetes is no longer within the recommended guidelines. She takes medication for her OA and diabetes.

Mrs Pathos sleeps poorly, has lost her appetite and has lost a lot of weight. She is finding it difficult to carry out personal and domestic activities of daily living. She is tearful and has stopped visiting friends. Maria has recently been doing more of the household duties and getting the shopping. She feels very tired, and is finding it difficult to cope.
